FIRST is an organization dedicated to helping students to grow and giving them the opportunity to learn about engineering. Founded in 1992 by Dean Kamen, FIRST began with 28 teams of highschool students who where tasked with designing and building a robot capable of complex tasks, an opportunity otherwise unavailable. Not only has the FIRST program grown at the highschool level to over 1000 active teams but has created a program for middle school students as well as a smaller scale highschool program. FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST's Middle School program, has been going on since 2001. Vex Robotics is the new FIRST program designed around a classroom setting.
