The Oregon Zoo Project

Partnership

This season, we have an exciting partnership between the Flaming Chickens and the Oregon Zoo. We'll use our robotics skills to benefit the community by building a robot that will shoot apples and fruit for the entertainment of the herd of seven elephants. Long days behind bars can be boring for any animal, so we hope to add some variety and interest into their daily routines. We have already reengineered an elephant feeding device and built new stimulator/feeder for the elephants. But as we continue integrating robots into this very popular zoo exhibit will also bring publicity and introduce everyone to FIRST!

The Oregon Zoo

Founded in 1887 by a phamacist who kept his animals in the back of his shop, the Oregon Zoo has grown exponentially. In 1959, it moved to it's current location five minutes west of downtown Portland and since then, it has added award-winning education programs that serve nearly 700,000 people both at the zoo, schools, and senior and community centers around the region. With a summer concert series, seasonal events and the zoo railway, the Oregon Zoo hosts more than one million visitors each year.
